Meet  Us
Judith (Judy) Schneider, LISW , Equine Assisted Mental Health
Therapist,
has been a social worker for over 20 years. She has worked with abused
and neglected children, chronically mentally ill adults, poly-substance abusers, military
families facing deployment, trauma and suicide. In addition, as a probation and parole
officer she has worked with violent and sexual offenders. Judy is both honored and
grateful to be able to share the healing power of the horse with you.

"Healing Through Horses has always been a dream of mine. I believe horses saved my
life as a youth. As I passed into my adolescent and adult years the horse has gifted me
with a sense of total wholeness. What I mean by this, is they accept me for who I am; will
teach me what I need to know and guide me to be a better person. They do this by
responding to my mood, state of mind, intentions and actions. They have shown me that
if I am direct, firm, soft, supple and deliberate then my communication skills will be
effective. If I am able to achieve this with the horse, then I am able to transfer these skills
to my clinical practice and to my human relationships. As I thought about how nature
heals, I knew Healing Through Horses had to be located near water, trees and on good
earth. Healing Through Horses is located a short walk on a dirt road from the Chama
River, nestled under old majestic cottonwood trees; and has a quietness to the land."

Wayne Brewster, Equine Specialist, has been involved with  horses for over 20
years. " When I moved to New Mexico from New Jersey in the 1970's, I realized animals
are natural healers. I believe a person with a quiet manner puts both horses and
humans at ease. Patience allows the horse to do their best at any given time. I have
come to understand how human beings can evolve if they are allowed to be themselves
in concert with the horse. I have often thought, If I was brought up in the West, I most
likely would have been a working cowboy and possibly a bull rider. I am committed to the
"old way" and try to incorporate this into my daily life."

As we look into the future, we see Healing Through Horses as we observe a young
horse; full of ideas, potential and skills yet to be mastered. We envision ourselves
offering internships to high school and college students, to become a community service
site for those who need to fulfill their commitments to the judiciary and offer our
community an opportunity to re-connect with the way of the horse. We envision
becoming a mobile mental health unit offering on -site services at schools, detentions
centers and any other venues which may benefit from our services. We look forward to
offering therapists, social workers, teachers, probation and parole officers, clergy,
attorneys, judges and administrators an opportunity to participate in Equine Assisted
Mental Health workshops, retreats and offering CEU credits for participants. We support
a collaborative approach to learning and healing.

Judy and Wayne met in 2003 when Judy was passing through New Mexico on her way to
Colorado to work on a dude ranch.  Little did they know what a trail ride, good cup of
coffee and horses would bring into their futures.  They were married in 2005 next to the
Chama River. Judy and Wayne live in Abiquiu, New Mexico with their horses, cats and a
very old lovable dog.
